I passed by peach orchards, turf farms, many large groves of old pecan tree stands, peanut farms and fields of freshly plowed rich red Georgia clay earth. I ended up in Americus, where trucks and tractors outnumber cars, and I found Scoggin's BBQ. Scoggin's pit cooks their pork hams over oak and hickory. Their pork is not pretreated with any rubs. The pork gets its flavor from the wood. I had a Q plate with baked beans, slaw and a sweet tea. The chopped Q comes already sauced. The sauce is made with ketchup, salt, mustard, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic salt and hot sauce. The slaw, with a mayo based sauce, was very good. The slaw consisted of mostly white and some green cabbage. My sweet baked beans were splendid and my already sauced chopped Q was equally wonderful. My sweet tea was also very good. For dessert, they serve a very good banana pudding. If you are a UGA fan you will be very pleased with the way the inside of Scoggin's BBQ is decorated. Scoggin's is in the process of adding grilled chicken and fresh veggies to their menu. Scoggin's BBQ is open on Monday and Tuesday from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm and on Thursday and Friday from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. They are closed on Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday.
