Back in the 20's & 30's Gumlog, Georgia was well known for its production of bootleg corn whiskey. Today, thanks to an old moon-shiner, Gumlog is known for its excellent Q & Fish Lodge, located off Georgia Highway 328 in the heart of Gumlog. The Gumlog Barbecue & Fish Lodge cooks their smoked pork hams over hickory wood. They also offer catfish fillets, perch, flounder and ribs. I opted for the chopped Q sandwich which came on an old school cafeteria plate with two pickles and chips. You will find that each table already has a pair of tea pitchers; one is sweet and the other "aint". The inside is wood paneled and the tables are covered with red and white checkered tablecloths. The inside walls are lodge themed with a few mounted bass and two or three 10-point buck heads. My chopped Q was excellent! As was the vinegar and tomato based sauce. My sweet tea was also very good. I will have to try the fish on my next visit. Like a moon shiner's still, the Gumlog Barbecue & Fish Lodge is a bit off the beaten path, but I did manage to find the place even in the pouring rain. Look for their sign to guide you, because you can't see their building from the road. Cash is king here because they don't take credit cards. Enjoy the Q and or the fish!
