When Superdawg opened in May of 1948, O'Hare was a military airport and Midway was Chicago's primary airport, Superdawg and O'Hare have literally grown up together. Today, the Superdawg Drive-In and its hotdogs are world famous and O'Hare constantly battles with Atlanta's Hartsfield for the title of world's busiest airport. Because of its proximity to O'Hare, Superdawg regularly feeds many of the airline pilots, crew and passengers. Limo's and taxis from O'Hare routinely stop by the drive-in picking up a quick meal. The Superdawg Drive-In has been featured in the in-flight magazines of every airline in the world, Singapore Airlines just recently featured the famous Chicago drive-in. We stopped by Superdawg on July 4^th 2009, the owner was out in the rain directing the drive-in's traffic. Having never eaten a true Chicago hotdog before, I could not think of a better time than the 4^th of July to have this American treat especially before the Sears Tower officially changed its name. Superdawg uses only the choices cuts of beef, the steak of hotdogs. Their beef contains no pork, no preservatives and no fillers and is specially made just for them. It also contains more garlic and spice and is smoked longer than standard dogs. Their buns are specially made for them in a local bakery and everything is made fresh daily. Superdawg hand peels and cuts thousands of pounds of Idaho potatoes every day. The father of the current owner has a deal with a farmer in Idaho for his top potatoes. Your order is assembled on a triangular steam-table to keep the fries constantly warm. The all- beef hotdogs are hot water boiled, but they will char-broil your dogs if you ask. My boxed Superdawg had a steamed poppy seed bun and was topped with yellow mustard, piccalilli (neon green sweet relish), white onions, a dill pickle slice, fries, a green pickled tomato and a few sport peppers. Superdawg will not put ketchup on your hotdog. True hotdogs will never have ketchup served on them. My Superdawg was truly outstanding! The quality and taste of the beef hotdog was superb. The excellent toppings just add to the overall impressive taste. The fried onion chips are a must-get, they are primo! And they also make an excellent strawberry shake. The third generation of the Superdawg family, the owner's daughter, will manage the new Superdawg opening in Wheeling, Illinois in October of 2009. Enjoy!
