On a hot summer day, the place to go in Altavista is the Dairy Freeze. The Dairy Freeze has been serving Altavista and Route 29 since 1961. From real milkshakes with fresh cut strawberries to waffle cones, banana splits, frozen yogurt, and colliders, they have it all. On previous visits I have had the vanilla and the strawberry milkshakes and they are both excellent. They also make excellent slawdogs. They have chili, onions, mustard, and coleslaw along with the familiar nuclear red hotdogs. The dogs and shakes are what keep me coming back again and again. If you are traveling on Route 29 make a pit stop in Altavista. You can stretch your legs and relax with something cold from the Dairy Freeze. It’s a great way to break up a long trip.
