What the Varsity is to Atlanta, Doumar’s is to Norfolk. This historic Virginia landmark is the longest running drive-in in the U.S. and its founder, Abe Doumar, created the world’s first ice cream cone. There are no menu boxes to order from here and you don’t have to push a button to give your static-filled order. Doumar’s has full curb service. The carhops all dress in white and wear white paper hats. The Hops also carry several copies of the full menu so everyone in your vehicle can get their own. As soon as we parked in a slot, a carhop was there to greet us. After you order, if you need something else just turn on your headlights for service. Your order comes on a window tray. I ordered the double meat minced barbecue sandwich with slaw and a thick vanilla milkshake. The minced Q with slaw and the thick shake were both excellent. Their Q sauce is a blend of peppers and spices and it comes in a nice small size squeeze bottle. I also had a double-dip of vanilla in a waffle cone. The vanilla was excellent and the fresh waffle cone was outstanding! The first ice cream cone Abe Doumar created was a waffle cone. So, he really created the world’s first ice cream cone and the world’s first waffle cone. Doumar’s is famous for their freshly made waffle cones so don’t leave without trying one. The current Doumar’s building has been there since 1934.
