Just down the street from Raleigh's famous neon Krispy Kreme sign you will find the Person Street Pharmacy & Soda Fountain. Like most of the original pharmacies/soda fountains, the Person Street Pharmacy is prominently located on the corner of Person St. and Pace St. in the historic Oakwood & Mordecia neighborhoods. The Oakwood neighborhood contains one of the largest collections of Victorian-Era homes in the country. The pharmacy is also located near Peace College. The Person St. Pharmacy has been in operation since 1910, the last original pharmacy/soda fountain remaining in Raleigh. Today, it is still a full service pharmacy that treats its local neighborhood like family with excellent customer care and service that you will not find at a medium or big box store. They also deliver within a five mile radius and they still have in store charge accounts. The original soda fountain is a great place to stop for lunch especially on Wednesdays when you can still get two hotdogs for 99 cents. The fountain also has cheeseburgers, ham and cheese, tuna salad, corndogs, pimento cheese, peanut butter and jelly, egg salad, patty melts, chicken salad, canned soup, fries, pound cake, coke floats, malts, milkshakes, orangeade, cherry smash, milk, hot chocolate and my favorite, a real vanilla Coke. And what I mean by real is that they add a squirt of real vanilla to your Coke from the fountain. I had a wonderful egg salad sandwich with four pickles and a real vanilla Coke. With the State Capitol, the North Carolina General Assembly, the Executive Mansion, The North Carolina Science Museum and The North Carolina History Museum all located less than a mile away, many of the pharmacy and soda fountain customers are state workers. Because of this, the weekday lunch rush here is beyond busy. Visit on a Saturday and you can easily find a parking spot on the street and a table at the fountain. They are closed on Sunday. Enjoy! Note: The popcorn vending machine still works; all you need is a dime.
