A bridge away from the traffic on Main Street, you will find the River Rock tucked away on the banks of a most scenic section of the Roanoke River. Opened in 1982 the River Rock is a relaxed sports bar that was recently voted best burger by the Roanoker Magazine. Although I could not smell what "the rock" was cooking when I first entered, I knew I wanted one of their burgers. Get seats by one of the two large windows overlooking the river and while you are waiting you can relax and watch the river roll peacefully by. My nicely sliced-in-half cheeseburger with mayo, mustard, onions, pickles on-the-side and ketchup you add yourself was very good. The setting is relaxing but it does come at a price since it opened, the Rock has survived 5 floods, including the monster flood of 1985 that saw water rise over the pool table. Enjoy!
