If the University of North Carolina's heart is in its basketball, then its stomach is definitely @ Sutton's. Located directly across from the UNC campus on Franklin Street, Sutton's Pharmacy & Soda Fountain has been feeding UNC's students and athletes since 1923. Be it basketball, football, golf, soccer, lacrosse or baseball, all of UNC's new recruits are taken to Sutton's when they are first introduced to the school. Here is a short list of some of those recruits that Sutton's has played host to over the years; Mia Hamm, Davis Love III, Tyler Hansbrough, Ty Lawson, Phil Ford, Larry Brown, Billy Cunningham, James Worthy, Michael Jordan, Sam Perkins, Jerry Stackhouse, Rasheed Wallace, George Lynch, Henrik Rodl, Derrick Phelps, Bob McAdoo, George Karl, Lawrence Taylor, Julius Peppers, Alge Crumpler, Natrone Means and so many others including of course Dean Smith, Roy Williams and Butch Davis. Why is Sutton's so popular? It's because their burgers are some of the best in the country. Everything @ Sutton's is made fresh: Their burgers are made with freshly ground beef and cooked fresh. My outstandingly perfect cheeseburger was topped with fresh cooked bacon, a freshly sliced white onion, mustard and ketchup. I also had an incomparably rare Coke with a squirt of real vanilla from the fountain. Sutton's is still a working pharmacy. Even if you are not one of the Tar Heel faithful they will still welcome you in like family. Enjoy! Note: Watch the parking meter when you park on the street. They are checked quite often.
