The Texas Tavern opened in 1930. Since then it has become a Roanoke landmark. They have chili, cheesy westerns (a hamburger with an egg on it), and hotdogs. It is open 24/7 year round, except Christmas. The Tavern is perfect for that late night meal. The clientele are from all walks of life. White collar, Blue collar, police, EMS crews, firemen, judges, students, and criminals. The jail lets them out late at night and the Texas Tavern is the only place open nearby for them to grab a bite to eat. Don’t let this deter you. Every town that has a greasy spoon that’s open all night is just the same as the Texas Tavern is in Roanoke. It didn’t deter the 3 Stooges, when they ate here in the early days of the Tavern. The Tavern is also close to the police department. My main reason to come here is for the hotdogs. The buns are steamed. The dogs are grilled. They are topped with mustard, onions, chili, and a great relish. My dogs were outstanding! You become addicted to them very quickly. I certainly have. Enjoy!
